The End of Apathy

Our days are numbered and there’s nothing we can do about it. At least, that’s the pill our “betters” over at Foreign Policy want us to swallow. In an editorial titled “The End of an Era…for White Males,” FP CEO and editor David Rothkopf waxes Talmudic about our scheduled demise:

By mid-century in the United States, the former majority population will be a minority: The majority, according to demographers, will be nonwhite. By that time, Europe will include massive populations from Africa and the Middle East, as well as Asia. This is to say that by 2050 white men will be the ones checking the “other” box on census forms.

Yes, our days of “oppression” and “tyranny” will finally be over. The voices of the “oppressed” and “silenced” in history will have their say, and we will build a future based on tolerance, equality, and…oh this is tiring.

The fact is, our people and our civilization are being replaced. Our motherland, Europe, is living the Camp of the Saints. In the United States, the majority of newborns belong to others. Our people are dying in record numbers, and continually throw themselves into consumer culture, drugs, or other frivolities in order to deaden their minds and senses to what is going on around them.

The political is the personal. It’s the ur friend/enemy distinction made by Carl Schmitt. It’s Greek and Persian, Roman and Barbarian, Christian and Saracen, und so weiter. The “other” is a constant in the history of humanity.

Mr. Rothkopf wants to persuade us that way of thinking is over:

There is an alternative to “other” and that is “all.” Rather than focusing on our differences as the smallest and most dangerous of our political leaders have done, the real leaders of this new era will distinguish themselves by focusing not just on the social diversity that makes great nations, but on the truth and wondrous benefits of the diversity that actually lives within us all.

No, a “civilization for all” will be a civilization for none. What he so aptly expresses is the ideal of the perfect consumer, the perfect cog. Plastic, malleable, and equally interchangeable. That’s the view from Davos anyway.

The truth is, nature has a way of biting back. The “other” will not dissappear, but Rothkopf and his kind will merely redefine who constitutes that “other.” To paraphrase Schmitt, he who defines the exception makes the rules. That “diversity” leads to conflict is something that has been known since the ancients. But that is not what needs to be addressed.

You, dear reader, are.

2050 isn’t a date, but an existential marker. It’s when we decide to either become who we are or fade into the history books. From Troy to Apollo 11, the Faustian spirit has invigorated our people and has given us purpose.

“Europeans,” said Ortega y Gasset “do not know how to live unless they are engaged in some great enterprise. When this is lacking, they grow petty and feeble and their souls disintegrate.”

The survival and perpetuation of our people is our generation’s “great enterprise.” All of us have been called to answer our times. Choosing not to “notice” or retreating into abstractions and nihilistic distractions is no longer an option. Ennui is over, and history never stopped.

The choice is clear. One the one hand we have stasis, decline, and eventually death. In the other we have vigor, renewel, and rebirth.

The choice is ours. Ignoring it, is no longer an option. We must choose our fate before it's sealed for us!
